PRESSURE RELEASE METHODS
15
QUICK RELEASE: This method releases pressure in the form of steam in just a couple of minutes.
When cooking has nished, you can release the built-up pressure manually by turning the Steam Release
Handle to the “Venting position. Always be cautious, using protective gloves or a long utensil as a stream
of hot steam will shoot out of
the valves. Once steam no longer escapes from the vent and the Float Valve has dropped, you can now
carefully open the Lid away from you. Be mindful of any remaining steam, water, or oil as these may cause burns.
NATURAL RELEASE: This method is a much slower than the quick release method. When cooking has
nished, let the built-up pressure release on its own without turning the Steam Release Handle. This may
take 10-40 minutes, or longer, depending on the amount of food in the cooker and the settings used. You
may wish to leave the Cooker on the Keep Warm setting while pressure is released, or you can turn it o or
unplug it so the contents will cool faster. Once the Float Valve drops down, you can now carefully open the
Lid away from you. As a precaution, you can turn the Steam Release Handle to Venting to make sure all
pressure has been completely released. Typically, using the quick release method after 10-15 minutes of
natural release will have allowed enough time to pass so as not to aect the end result of the recipe.
WHICH METHOD SHOULD I USE?
Most recipes will designate whether to use quick or natural release. For food with large liquid volume, starch
content, or ingredients that are likely to foam, such as oatmeal, beans, pasta, or soup, use the Natural Release
method to prevent thick liquid from splattering out.
Never block the Steam Vent or try to open the Lid while the pressure cooker is running or releasing steam.
Keep unprotected skin away from the Steam Release Valve when the pressure cooker is in operation or when
releasing steam. Never touch the Lid or any metal parts of the cooker with any unprotected skin as it may
cause injury. Use tongs or mitts when releasing pressure manually to prevent injury.
